With a heavy heart I have been updating my links to take into account the recent collapse over at ezFolk - basically, all the tens of thousands of MP3s by thousands of folk artists are now history. You can read all about it over at ezFolk - Richard (the site owner) has retained the core information services and resources (which are still of immense worth), and you can still join us on Facebook...but, still, what a f**king bummer!

Where is the Civil Society?

Seeing the typical rush to blame everyone but themselves which has overtaken the ineffective executive and law-enforcement in London (and elsewhere) makes me consider how complex the causes of the recent riots have been, and looking beyond the misery it has caused communities, one has to ask; how significant is the role of the consumer society in assisting the development of selfish and sociopathic behaviour? Has civil society ceased to arm itself against thuggery, or is it just that the repeated battering it has taken from the twin attacks of overly-zealous security services (obsessed with terror from within and without) and rampant consumer-led capitalism has rendered it unwanted and ineffective? Certainly, the present government and various leaders of UK society seem to be drawn from home-grown elites or multi-national corporations. Is it surprising that those at the other end of society feel detached?

We hear a lot about the 'squeezed middle' in the economic sense, but no-one seems to have considered how culturally significant the loss of an informed consent from the vast majority of citizens might actually be. The lessons of history point to the rise of new and often unsavoury political systems, or at least the collapse of meaningful government. It is a matter of some concern that the folks at the top of the pile seem to have skipped those classes...

Justice?

The current growing scandal over the News Of The World and its activities just demonstrates once again how there is a different set of rules for the rich and powerful - much like the bankers, once can only assume that the cohorts of Murdoch believe themselves to be untouchable and capable of generating their own morality. The fact that there is such a disparity between the mock concern of their various journalistic crusades and the reality of their own activities (deleting the phone messages of a missing child during a police investigation - seriously, how can anyone defend that?) just invites one to think that there is more than a whiff of sulphur about these people.

The vague and almost Clouseau-esque police investigations, along with the ineffective meanderings of parliament haven't helped produce anything other than a real expectation that there is so much more to all of this than meets the eye - but you are left to wonder if, as with the financiers and bankers who shafted us all so very recently, these crimes will go unpunished.
